Material

Nitronic 32, UNS S24100, XM-28
Note that the designation “ Nitronic®” is registered trademarks of AK Steel Corporation.

Overview

Nitronic 32 is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel, its often selected as an alternative to 304 stainless steel when higher strength and comparable corrosion resistance is necessary, both are ideal material for simple cold-headed parts. The high work hardening rate of  Nitronic 32 allows for increased strength while maintaining ductility. Also, The material can be readily hot worked or cold worked, with annealing recommended after severe cold forming.

Application
  • Aerospace Applications: In certain aerospace components that require a combination of high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance
  • Petrochemical Industry: Used in applications such as heat exchangers, pumps, and valves, where resistance to corrosion and high-temperature performance are required
  • Chemical Processing: Used for equipment such as reactors, valves, and fittings, where resistance to corrosion and high-temperature stability are essential
  • Power Generation: Used for components such as turbine blades, seals, and combustion chambers, where high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance are crucial
  • Automotive Exhaust Systems: Can withstand the harsh conditions of exhaust gases and effectively resist corrosion and degradation at elevated temperatures
  • Industrial Furnaces and Kilns: Can withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures without significant degradation

Corrosion Resistance

When higher strength and comparable corrosion resistance is necessary, Nitronic 32 is often selected as an alternative to 304 stainless steel. In weak acid solutions and pitting media approaches, the corrosion resistance of the material approaches type 304. In more aggressive media, the material is somewhat less corrosion resistant than type 304. Due to its higher carbon content the material is not as resistant to intergranular attack as type 304 and will not pass ASTM A262 tests when sensitized at 1250°F

Heat Treatment

Nitronic 32 does not harden by heat treatment. Anneal by heating to 1950°F followed by rapid cooling.

Heating and Pickling

Heating of Nitronic 32 is commonly performed in heat treatment to relieve residual stresses that may have developed during fabrication or machining processes. The specific heating process and temperature range will depend on the desired stress relief and the specific requirements of the application. The heating process is followed by controlled cooling to prevent the formation of new stresses.

Pickling is a common process used to remove surface impurities and oxide layers from Nitronic 32 stainless steel. It involves immersing the material in a pickling solution, typically an acid-based solution, to dissolve contaminants and restore the material's corrosion resistance. During the pickling process, it is crucial to control the concentration and temperature of the pickling solution to prevent excessive etching or corrosion of the stainless steel surface.

Hot and Cold Forming

Nitronic 32 may be formed by the same methods used with other stainless steels. It can be readily formed into various shapes and sizes using common forming techniques.

Hot Forming: The elevated temperatures soften the Nitronic 32 , making it more malleable and easier to shape by hot rolling, hot forging, and hot extrusion. The hot forming of Nitronic 32 is commonly used for larger and more complex components that require significant deformation or shaping.

Cold Forming: Nitronic 32 also exhibits good cold formability, the material can easy shaping and deformation at room temperature by cold rolling, cold drawing, bending, and stamping. The cold forming of Nitronic 32  is often used for producing smaller components, intricate shapes, and parts with tight tolerances.

Machining

Although, Nitronic 32 has machinability characteristics are similar to that of other austenitic stainless steels, but the high work hardening rate of Nitronic 32, making its need heavy machines with carbide coated tooling when machining. Also, the material will have to be held more rigidly and slower speeds used. Its important to note that slow speeds, positive feeds and abundant resulphurized lubricant are essential to success in machining this material.

Welding

The weldability fo Nitronic 32 stainless steel is similar to 304 stainless steel, it can be welded using conventional methods such as gas tungsten arc (GTAW), gas metal arc (GMAW), and shielded metal arc (SMAW), and no pre-heating is required. When filler metal is required, a filler with similar chemistry to the base material should be used to avoid a reduction in strength or resistance to intergranular attack.
