UNS S32906 stainless steel is a high-alloy duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel belongs to the ASTM A182/A240 standard, which developed to withstand the corrosive environments present in the stamicarbon urea process. Not only the material offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion, but also it provides high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In addition, F65 has good weldability.

Corrosion Resistance

UNS S32906 duplex stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance in various environments, including high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly those containing chloride ions. The material also provides good resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking due to its duplex structure.It's important to note that the corrosion resistance of UNS S32906 can vary depending on the specific operating conditions, concentrations of corrosive agents, and the presence of other factors such as temperature, pH, and velocity.

Heat Treatment

UNS S32906 stainless steel can undergo heat treatment for optimization of its properties. The typical heat treatment process involves solution annealing at a temperature range of approximately 1020-1100°C (1868-2012°F) followed by rapid cooling. 

Heating and Pickling

Heating and pickling are common processes used for UNS S32906 stainless steel to remove surface scale, oxide layers, and other contaminants.  First, UNS S32906 is heated at a certain temperature range to remove organic material. Then, it undergoes pickling by immersing it in an acid solution, typically a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid , to dissolve and remove scale and oxides. After pickling, thorough rinsing with water is performed to remove residual acid. Passivation, an optional step, may follow to enhance corrosion resistance.

Hot and Cold Forming

UNS S32906 stainless steel can be both hot and cold formed, although there are some considerations to keep in mind for each process. The hot forming of this material typically occurs above 950°C (1742°F) to ensure the material is in the austenitic phase, and techniques such as hot rolling, hot forging, or hot extrusion can be used. However, cold forming is performed at room temperature and involves processes like bending, drawing, or stamping. Cold forming causes the material to work harden, increasing its strength and reducing its ductility. 


UNS S32906 stainless steel is a dual phase material with a combination of austenitic and ferritic microstructures, which can affect their machinability. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, UNS S32906 generally have lower cutting speeds. Also, other key points such as tooling selection, feed rates, cutting fluids, rigidity and stability, and chip control need to be considered when machining F65.


UNS S32906 stainless steel has good weldability and suitable method of fusion welding is gas tungsten arc welding GTAW/TIG with shielding gas of Ar+2% N. It must be welded without preheating and subsequent heat treatment is normally not necessary.
