Alloy 400 is a single-phase solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that has excellent resistance to many corrosive environments in the temperature range from minus to 800°F. This alloy can only be hardened by cold working rather than heat treatment. The Curie temperature of the alloy is within the ambient temperature range and is affected by changes in the chemical composition of the alloy. It is recommended to use it carefully in applications that require strong non-magnetic features. The ratio of copper to nickel in alloy 400 is almost the same as the ratio in the ore from which the metal originates. The alloy was first patented more than 100 years ago, and it is still one of the most commonly used corrosion-resistant alloys produced commercially.
The characteristics of VDM®Alloy 400 are:
Resistance to stress corrosion caused by chloride
Excellent strength even at lower application temperatures
Compared with other high alloy materials, easy to process
Approved for use in pressure vessels from -10 to 425°C (14 to 797°F) according to VdTÜV material table 263 and higher
According to ASME boiler and pressure vessel specifications, the maximum temperature can reach 480°C (896°F).
It is recommended that the alloy be welded by gas arc welding, metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and submerged arc welding.
The forging of the alloy Monel 400 should be carried out through controlled procedures.
This alloy needs to be hot worked by selecting an appropriate temperature. The typical temperature range for hot working is 648-1176°C (1200-2150°F).
Soft mold materials can be used for cold processing to obtain better processing results.
The MONEL 400 alloy can be annealed at a temperature of 926°C (1700°F).

Alloy 400 has been widely used in various industries and is particularly useful in the marine industry and chemical processing industry. Typical applications include pumps and valves, propeller shafts, ship fixtures and fasteners, electronic components, springs, chemical processing equipment, fresh water and brine tanks, processing vessels and piping, boiler feed water heaters, and other heat exchangers.
The high tensile strength nickel/copper alloy is highly resistant to atmospheric corrosion, brine and various acid and alkali solutions. Used in marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps and heat exchangers.
