17-4 Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel


Material Performance

17-4PH stainless steel is a magnetic precipitation hardening--martensitic stainless steel with special metallic elements copper and niobium.17-4PH stainless steel is the most widely used material of all the precipitation-hardening stainless steels.


After heat treatment, the mechanical properties will be more perfect, and the tensile strength can reach the compressive strength of 1100-1300 Mpa (160-190 ksi). This grade cannot be used above 300°C (572°F) or very low temperature (impact AKV -60°C≥45J).It has good corrosion resistance to the atmosphere diluted acid and salt, just same as 304 and 430.

 

Features:High hardness, good toughness, good wear resistance, good corrosion resistance, good attenuation performance, strong anti-fatigue and anti-dropping performance.

 

Its valuable combination of properties gives designers opportunities to add reliability to their products while simplifying fabrication and often reducing costs.

Heat treatment and Mechanical Properties

Type 17–4 PH steel is hardened by heating solution-treated material, condition A, to between 900/ºF (480ºC) and 1150ºF (620ºC) for one to four hours, depending upon the temperature, then air cooling.

As supplied 17-4PH, is usually in the solution treated condition, (Condition A). It can be heat treated at different temperatures to off a wide range of properties.

Delivery Condition

1.Solid Solution/Annealing

Heat at 1900ºF (1040ºC) for 30 minutes and cool to below 90ºF (32ºC) to allow complete

transformation to martensite. Sections less than 3’’ may be quenched in a suitable liquid while those sections over 3’’ should be rapidly air cooled. Parts should not be used in the solution – treated condition due to possible problems with stress corrosion cracking.

 

2.Solid Solution+Aging Treatment(Customized according to customer requirements)

For condition H900 heat solution-treated material at 900ºF (480ºC) for 1 hour and air cool.

For conditions H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150: heat solution-treated material at appropriate temperature ± 15ºF (± 8ºC) for 4 hours and air cool.


Processing Equipment

20 tons complete electric arc furnace,AOD refining,LF refining,VD vacuum smelting equipment, 1.5 tons and 5 tons ESR equipment,5 tons and 10 tons forging hammers,7.5 meters and 9 meters chamber annealing furnaces,straightening machines , peeling machine, grinding machine, polishing machine, lathe and other production&processing equipment ,etc.

 

Testing Equipment

Direct reading spectrometer, hardness tensile and impact testing machine, ultrasonic nondestructive flaw detector,metallurgical microscope,etc.

 

All the following can be tested:inclusions, retained austenite, grain size, low temperature impact (AKV -30°C ≥ 45J, AKV -45°C ≥ 45J, AKV -60°C ≥ 45J, etc.), flaw detection,ultrasonic testing, penetrant testing and other high grades required test.


Advantage

1. Different smelting methods:

EAF+AOD+LF, EAF+AOD+LF+ESR, EAF+AOD+LF+IESR, EAF+AOD+VAR, VIM+VAR.

2. Better cooling: cooling in water to keep the material organization even and stability. Most of suppliers cool in air.

3. All polish bar will be ultrosonic tested or dye-penetrant tested for free before shipment.

4. Impact test can be down as per different industrial requirement: AKV-60℃≥45J、-40℃≥45J、-30℃≥45J、-20℃≥60J、0℃≥60J)

5. Heat Treatment: Solid solution or Solid solution + Aging.

6. Customization: American standard, Japanese standard, European standard and other standards can be customized.

7. Stock: Stock for round bar Ф6-Ф400 is complete.

8. Ferrite content can be controlled as customized(≤1%, ≤3%, ≤5%).

9. Grain size can be ≥6;Inclusions content A,B,C,D,DS can be ≤10.
